EDIT: HERE IS THE PROJECT. Please, have at it!
Additional edit - Please see subsequent pages/posts in this thread for current project progress, as the UCA is presently fussy.

And again, take a look through here if you'd like some help or ideas on how/where to start: http://www.shredaholic.com/lead.html

I have nothing presently tangible to offer you, if you came expecting gifts. All I have is an idea: a bold new initiative. I want to co-author an exercise etude, with perhaps 10 other people - whatever it takes, with the intent to write a song out of a string of etudes that focus on nailing as many shred techniques as we can think of. Maybe we can list of some 26 different shred techniques and styles and use Rehearsals A-Z to showcase each one, so that it flows like a beautifully complex piece of art - IE they share a common key signature (mostly) and have smooth transitions. And the main hope of this piece is that any "intermediate" player can practice each rehearsal separately, and with enough practice, essentially master that technique. Then, to play the song-etude fluidly start to finish, pretty much suggests that you can tackle any beast. With some major effort and scrutiny, this tab could become famous across the net. =D

So for now, three things. I want to see who's interested (please respond) as well as gather a list of techniques that we can write for this piece.

Techniques/Styles wrote:
1.Tapping
2.Sweeping
3.Alternate picking
4.String skipping
5.Legato Picking
6.Swing tempo
7.Using a slide (yes, I said it.)
8.Chicken picking.
9.Artificial Harmonics
10.Natural Harmonics
11.Chromatics
12.Vibrato
13.Hammer-ons/Pull-offs
14.Rhythm Exploration
15.Elegant Phrasing (?)
16.Two-handed Tapping
17.Multi-fingered Tapping
18.Sliding
19.Bends
20.Economy Picking

Lastly, I'd like a list of other resources you any of you use for something like this.

I'm definetly interested, but I'm not good enough.
I think my sweeps and my legato is fast by this time, though not good enough for a song like this.
I'm looking forward to hearing about it's progress!

EDIT:
Hell no, my sweeping sucks. I just figured that out while listening to one of Joe Spiro's (Joe the shredder) powertabs.

If this is still active, I've got a few sweeping/tapping/sliding (all three individually and combined) ideas that have been floating around my fingers for a while. PM me if you want my help.

I was just lookin at the list there.

I'll have a ponder over string skipping and perhaps artificial harmonics.

Can you elaborate on Rhythm Exploration for me?

I could help out with some tapping. One- or two-finger only though.

How's this planned to take place? I guess we could set a tonality, a tempo and instrumentation (we could stick to two dist. gtrs. - lead and rhythm) and then everybody writes a part (I did not say "riff" on purpose because a part can consist of more than a riff) and then we'll try to connect them etc.?

I have a couple of two handed tapping and sweep picking exercises tucked away that you could use if you wanted
Also Ive got some stuff that uses harmonics quite a bit that you could use for various harmonic exercises

Good ideas.

i did think of tabbing the natural harmonic only version of "Sweet Child O' Mine" but from what i gather all these techniques are going into 1 song yes? or a collection of songs based on these techniques?

Oooo, and suddenly there was a good deal of interest from out of nowhere. Well, what I was thinking is, yes, it would be one big long song, in that all the etudes would sort of connect, or at least be able to transition into the next rehearsal/technique. You might have shades of a recurring theme, or keep it in the same key or style, or just have some degree of connectivity from one exercise to the next. If you play it from start to finish, it would make some degree of musical sense, and each rehearsal would be an excellent exercise on its particular technique. I think a public (or private?) c-project would work very well for this.

So one of the concerns I have right now is that, while it's awesome you have these exercises you're ready to offer, I'm not sure they might meld as well with the other exercises. But perhaps we can still use the essential idea and change its key or alter it a little bit so it fits. And that would be totally fine.

Another concern: I wasn't thinking any one person would have a monopoly on a particular technique. They might predominantly craft it, but I think the whole thing would be open to editing and tweaking by everyone else. This was my vision. But I'm willing to go with the masses.

Yeah, I agree. C-project would probably be the best... whether public or private I don't know.

Are those 19 exercises as many as can be thought of? Perhaps where we could go from there is to arrange them in some sort of order that flows (perhaps connected by style, like a spectrum of colors or something) and then we can work on it that way.

Or should we just start a C-project and mess around with an idea until we settle on a technique and opener we want to use, and wing it from there?

If we start a C project and just all submit ideas there will be a massive mess of ideas

I know its your idea Golbez but might I propose that you start a C project and say that in the first week we all submit say tapping ideas, then the second sweeping or whatever so the ideas submitted at one time are all part of the same section making it easy to sort out

But its your gig your rules bro

Well I quite like your idea, and that's sort of the direction I want to go in. And I don't mean to be a monarch, (so don't feel bashful about making suggestions!) I just thought it'd be a cool project, and I'm more than happy to work with others rather than calling the shots and ruining its direction and/or participation.

To me, it's going to be a linear approach. We start with one technique and write a riff/etude/tune and shape it till we're happy that it's tricky for its technique, does the job, and sounds good. Then we pick another technique that could possibly borrow a phrase or melody from the previous passage and move on into a new one. So perhaps an explosion of ideas on one technique is a good place to start as a brainstorm.

Or, maybe the first and opening riff could be a chord progression exercise that goes over a couple simple progressions that sound pretty good, and could serve as a guide for the rest of the piece. So the first rehearsal wouldn't be so technically difficult. This can be omitted; just another idea.

So, C-project. Public or private? Everyone have their UCA membership? You need one for the C-project. Sign up now:
